History

Joseph Pilates developed the method in the 1930's as a means to regain and maintain good health, by connecting & conditioning the body, mind & stimulating the neuromuscular system.

He drew inspiration from the philosophies of the east and practices such as tai-chi and yoga as well as from his own experience in more conventional western exercise methods such as gymnastics, acrobatics and dance.

His fundamental approach was based on the belief that balance of body & mind is the only route to good health, often quoting Frederick Schiller: “it is the mind itself which shapes the body”.
